Electric Radiant Snow Melting SystemsI remember the good ol' days when Grandpa would either grab a shovel and go out to shovel snow or he would ask me to bundle up and clear off the driveway. But technological advances are changing the way we deal with snow-laden driveways. Nowadays we can sit in the front room and sip hot cocoa while we watch the driveway clear itself of snow. I wonder what Grandpa would have given for a radiant snow melting system. Surely he would have given his collection of shovels.
Winter hasn’t arrived yet but we're already getting little reminders of what is to come. A cold front moved through not long ago that had us reaching for our coats. It won’t be long that we will be dealing with the cold on a more long term basis. According to the weatherman, we are supposed to have a wetter than average winter this year, and in many places much of the precipitation will come in the form of snow. The best tool to battle the white stuff has to be an electric radiant snowmelt system (a.k.a., a heated driveway ). To install a heated driveway, heat cable is laid out and then the concrete or asphalt is poured on top of it. A snow sensor is then mounted either in the pavement or on the roof of the home. When precipitation and cold temperatures are detected, the snow sensor triggers the control unit which then activates the snowmelt system to heat the driveway. The heat radiates out from the heat cable, and as John Madden might say, “Boom, the snow is melted!” These electric radiant snow melting systems are catching on for good reason. With a radiant heated driveway, you don’t have to lift a finger. If you are in an area where you could benefit from this convenience I have no doubt that you will not regret installing this system. |
